WELCOME TO DAN AND DEBBIE’S CREAMERY

Nestled in the heart of Ely, Iowa, our creamery is where we handcraft the dairy products our family is proud to share—cheese curds, small-batch ice cream, butter, and milk.
Whether you’re here to shop, take a tour, or join a seasonal event, you’ll get a warm welcome and a true taste of what makes our creamery special.

Plan your visit

Whether you’re stopping in for a quick scoop or making us part of your Iowa day trip, we can’t wait to see you. Bring your family, bring your friends, and bring your appetite for ice cream and all things dairy!

If you’d like to take home cheese curds, butter, or milk, we recommend bringing a cooler with ice packs—especially on warm days or if you have a longer drive. That way, you can stock up on your favorites without worrying about keeping them cold.

We’re an easy stop along the Cedar Valley Nature Trail, close to several Iowa attractions, and a welcoming spot to relax, enjoy a treat, and experience a taste of our family creamery.

Cream Top Milk

Under the same roof as our creamery store you will find our production room. Our modern day production facility is the space in which we take milk from our family farm and turn it into a variety of small batch dairy products.

Local Goods

Our creamery store boasts more than just our farm fresh dairy products. You can also find locally made jams, honey, baked goods, and more — all made in the state of Iowa by other small farmers and growers.

Viewing Room

Step back into our viewing room which overlooks where we make our dairy products. We’re not in production 24/7. As a small team, our schedule can shift—sometimes we work odd hours to tend to the cows, or even wrap up early during harvest season to help haul in loads of silage. While you may or may not catch us in action, you’ll still get an insider’s view of our creamery and the story behind what we make.

TOURS AT THE CREAMERY

Curious how we make our products? Book a private group tour for a behind-the-scenes look at our production room while hearing the story of our family farm.
We’re a small-batch creamery, so you’ll typically see one product being made during your visit. Sometimes our team is busy with other important work like deliveries or helping in the store—but no matter what’s happening, your guide will walk you through our process from cow to cone.

FAQ's

Tours last about 45–60 minutes, depending on questions and group size.
We encourage new groups to book tours, as our process doesn’t change much year to year. Repeat visits may feel very similar to your first experience.
Not really. Our tour is mostly stationary—you’ll be in our viewing area looking down into the production room while your guide talks you through what’s happening. It’s a great option for most mobility levels.
No. Our tours take place at our creamery in Ely, not at our dairy farm. You’ll learn about our farm and how we care for our cows, but there are no animals on-site.
At this time, we only offer private group tours for schools, organizations, and other groups. We don’t have public tours for individuals or small walk-in parties.
Yes. All tours must be booked ahead of time so we can have a guide available and the space ready for your group. We’re not able to accommodate walk-ins.
We milk 150 Holstein cows each day on our family farm in Ely, Iowa. Holstein cows are easily distinguished by their black and white spots and are known for being #1 best cow breed for milking.
The cows are able to go into the robotic milkers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Most of the girls go in every 8-10 hours.
Our cows are fed what is referred to as a mixed ration. It is a mix of hay silage, corn silage, high-moisture corn, orchard grass, sorghum sedan grass, alfalfa, whey (left over from our cheese curds), and vitamins and minerals.
A milking cow will consume approximately 90 pounds of feed each day and will drink about 40 gallons of water.

No way. Dan and Debbie's Creamery cows are NOT treated with rBST or rBGH. Instead, we treat them with great care and delicious feed all grown on our family farm. Each of our cows is given a name, not a number, that stays with her for life.

We have been milking cows for almost 40 years. Our first generation dairy farm started with 30 cows and we've grown into a herd of 150 Holstein cows.

Homogenization is a process that breaks apart fat molecules under high pressure, leaving the fat suspended and evenly dispersed throughout the milk. Our milk is non-homogenized which means that the cream naturally rises to the top. Unless you want to consume the cream top separate from the rest of the milk you need to give it a good shake before you drink it. We choose not to homogenize in an effort to keep our milk as close to its natural state as possible.

Cheese curds are an essential product of the cheese making process. Before cheeses like cheddar are formed into blocks or wheels, they begin as curds. Fresh curds are known for having a slightly rubbery texture that squeaks when you eat them.
Cheese curds squeak because the elastic protein strands in a cheese curd will rub against the enamel of your teeth creating that "squeaky" cheese. This characteristic is typically a sign of freshness, but serving cheese curds at room temperature or popping them in the microwave for a few seconds will generally restore their squeak.
You bet you can. We have a viewing room that is open whenever our creamery store is open. Come on out and watch us work!
The biggest difference between our products and many other dairy companies is that we do everything from farm to table. We began as a dairy farming family, and we still milk those cows as a family, but now get to take that quality milk to make quality products. It all starts with the non-GMO crops that we plant and harvest each year on our land. It transitions to the care that we put into our animals keeping them healthy and comfortable at all times. And it ends with the small batches that allow us greater quality control over each product we make.
