A Zero Waste Product: Tallow Balm

Touchberry Farm + Garden is very proud to present our newest farm fresh product: tallow balm!

So I know what you are thinking, what the heck is tallow balm?

Tallow is rendered suet (aka leaf) fat of ruminant animals like sheep and cows. Suet is the nutrient dense fat that surrounds the animals organs, typically harvested from the kidneys and loins.

If you are curious as to tallow’s benefits and what it can do for your skin, let’s get into it!

• Tallow is an amazing moisturizer for your skin. It is naturally high in saturated and monounsaturated fats, which helps to hydrate and nourish your skin. The best part about tallow balm compared to synthetic alternatives in skin care is that they fatty acids found naturally in tallow are similar to the composition of human skin, so it can be easily absorbed and utilized by the skin.
• Tallow has been known to offer anti-inflammatory properties which can help soothe irritated skin. Vitamin E, which acts an an antioxidant and helps to reduce inflammation, is found in it’s natural form in tallow. This makes tallow a good choice for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin.
• Tallow is a natural ingredients which our ancestors have used for centuries; free from synthetic chemicals, preservatives, and fragrances which can irritate skin. This is just another reason why tallow is a great option for people with sensitive skin.

Our tallow balm is made right here in Ely, Iowa from kidney suet. And it’s made with only three ingredients: suet, salt, and coconut oil. We don’t add any fluff or fragrances in, because that could irritate skin. We recommend that it is for external use only, but technically it is made with all safe ingredients, so it is skincare you could eat!

We know that there are many plant based and synthetic ingredients out there in the skincare industry, but it is our hope to provide our community with another option that our ancestors have been using for centuries.
