“I was told by friends that I would get tired of smoked meats after working with them each day – after 15 years, I am wondering when that will happen!” said Jerry Roorda, Owner and Head Butcher of Int’Velds Meat Market in Pella, Iowa. Jerry was an Equipment Application Specialist at Vermeer Manufacturing. He grew tired of the extensive travel, both domestic and international and has always enjoyed cooking and smoking meats. The In’t Veld’s Meat Market owners were ready to retire, and so he decided to make the change and jump into business ownership.

So Jerry purchased the existing business that was started in 1941 by Klaas In’t Velds. He added his own spin to the business by adding their amazing snack sticks to the line of products that they produce in their meat market. They also produce Pella Bologna, Summer Sausage and other smoked meats. One of the most delicious Pella specialties is ring bologna, a taut tube of salami-type meat, smoke and cured, curved into the shape of a horseshoe. It can be sliced, eaten cold as a snack, or can be enjoyed as a hot meal. “Pella Bologna kind of put us on the map and what we are recognized for.  For me, my favorite is whichever I am eating that day,” said Roorda. They have a small but mighty team, with about 11 full time employees and 10-12 part time employees across the retail, production and restaurant aspects of their business. In’t Veld’s is a full-service meat market located on the east side of the square in downtown Pella. They have the distinction of being the only meat market to make every ring of their famous bologna on site. Every step from the grinding and mixing to the curing and packaging is completed in their local facility.
